Stop Luring Our Children Into Pokie Gambling

Sure, kids are banned from being in the pokie rooms themselves. But its not enough.

But what about the pokie rooms that are wide open to all patrons. Kids having a meal are continually bombarded with the bright lights and obnoxious pokie music. KENO screens are affixed to the walls calling for more gambling. Children can't go into the gaming area themselves... but they are ever so close they might as well be.

Parents and kids are enticed inside these pokie places by offers of free food, free movies and children's entertainment. Children's play areas host lighted up coin operated machines based on chance with titles such as "A Winner Every Time" and "Grin and Win".

Adults can freely choose from entertainment permitted by the Government; children are incapable of making such choices. These adult activities include:

drinking alcohol, prostitution, betting, and smoking.

Many venues prohibit children from attending musical or theatrical events because of the danger of exposing them to experiences that could cause harm even if accompanied by an adult. Why doesn't the same apply to pokie places? Is rock music or a comedian more dangerous than a gambling addiction? Of course not.

But sometimes the adults have limited choices themselves. Many Pokie Places with the worst gambling addictions are located in the poorer areas of our community where offers of free food, playrooms and movies for kids is attractive.

To stop this madness costs no more than painting a sign on a door and then enforcing this most reasonable restriction.

Pokie operators need to be told. And the biggest pokie pub operator is Woolworths with over 11,000 pokies. And Woolworths needs to be told.

It's both easy, free and will take only a few seconds to electronically sign the petition

If pub owners don't want to voluntarily exclude children then we need to tell our government leaders too. Let Woolworths, your Premier and Minister for Gambling know how you feel.

It will take so very little to make such a big difference. Let's draw the line on pokie gambling with our children.
