About us

Who runs PokieAct?

PokieAct is a reflection of its volunteers and not the people who “run” it. Volunteers will be the people who will spread the word, encourage others to join and perhaps donate.

PokieAct was founded by Paul Bendat and is based upon the success of the U.S. based MoveOn.org, Australia's PokieAct.org.au and the launch of the Obama for president campaign. All these web sites enabled ordinary people to come together and effect positive change as one voice.

Paul has worked as a lawyer, television and radio station manager and in wine retailing both in Australia and the US. He also created the www.PokieWatch.org wiki with the goal of improving self-regulation of responsible pokie gambling practices. paul@pokieact.org

What's the point?

There are many worthwhile Australian organizations dedicated to the complex issues involved in minimising or eliminating the harm caused by pokies. PokieAct.org is focused on one issue. And this can issue can be easily fixed by pokie pubs doing no more than painting a sign on their entrance doors keeping children out.

What am I in for as a PokieAct.org member?

If you've made the choice, PokieAct members will receive emails telling you about how you can make a difference. We will ask you to spread the word about PokieAct. We'll suggest ways you might send an email to a member of parliament, call up your local commercial, ABC or community radio station, or attend an event.

[top]

Can I get involved or suggest ideas?

Of course! While PokieAct is focused on only one issue, we do not think for a moment that there mightn't be better ways to Keep Kids Away from Pokie Pubs. We're always interested in better ways to spread the word and get the decision makers to make the right call. Please send us an email at volunteer@pokieact.org
